About Ray
I am a Surrey based artist and sculptor. Although I trained in Graphic Design, painting and drawing were always my first love. After college I spent many years working as a freelance illustrator for advertising agencies and design groups, but over time I found myself drawn more and more to working with wood.
What began as curiosity with carved wood gradually became a real passion. I love the honesty of the material - its warmth, its grain, its unpredictability - and the quiet challenge of creating something unexpected from it. Pushing wood to its limits, whether on a large scale or in miniature, continues to fascinate me,
Over the years I’ve been commissioned to create architectural models, advertising pieces, trophies and bespoke presentation pieces. My work has ranged from large wall pieces to intricate miniature carvings, and I take particular pleasure in exploring scale, texture and form.
In 2014, my interest in working small led me to become involved with the Royal Society of Miniature Painters Sculptors and Gravers. I have exhibited at their annual exhibition in London ever since, and in 2020 I had the honour of being elected President - a role I held until November 2025.
Today my practice is increasingly sculptural, varying in scale but always rooted in a love of shape, form and the tactile qualities of wood.
